I find this is a question that is asked a lot in the fitness
industry. Like most answers, its not a one size fits all as there are so many
different components that need to be taken into consideration.
What kind of training are you doing?
How many days a week are you training?
What is your lifestyle outside of your training like?
How much sleep do you have each night?
The list can go on and on and each question will affect your
So how do you know when to train and when to rest?
To answer this question I think its important to become aware of
your body. If you find yourself constantly exhausted and lacking energy, its
because you’re exhausted and lacking energy.
Imagine your bodies energy like a ‘life bar’ in street fighter
or mortal kombat. Every time you have stress in your life, you lose a little
bit of life in that life bar. Your body doesn’t discriminate between stresses
either. It could be an exhausting and long day at work, emotional stresses from
relationships or a super intense HIIT workout. All these things deplete you of
your energy and if you don’t allow yourself adequate rest then you will find
yourself with no life in your ‘life bar’ and ready to be KO’ed.
Its incredibly important to remember that whilst very
beneficial, doing high intensity workouts like running, powerlifting or HIIT
workouts is placing stress on our nervous system. If you place more and more
stress on an overwhelmed nervous system eventually its going to start to fail
you. This will lead to fatigue and a weakened immune system which will leave
you feeling sick, run down and not even in a position to train.
You don’t have to ‘smash’ or ‘kill’ a workout every day of the
week. It’s important to allow your body a chance to recover from whatever
exercise or stressful activities you are doing.
Never underestimate the power of a long walk. Its low impact,
its not stressful and its still a great form of exercise. Its one of the best
things to do for both your physical and mental health. Some of my most
important life decisions were made whilst out for a leisurely stroll.
So when asking yourself the question of whether you are training
too much, always remember to consider the other influences in your life. The
less stress and energy-draining worries you have in your life, the more energy
you can put into your training. Focus on lowering anxiety and the stress that
comes with every day life, focus on having a good nights sleep and focus on
having a positive and healthy mindset. When you can get a handle on all these
things, you will wake up with abundant energy.
