I’m not talking, time off work, at home watching Netflix. I am asking actually surrounding yourself within pure silence. Dead silence, off the electronics and taking  a moment to completely let go. Unwind, be thoughtless. And alone

 We were recommended Terpung in Bali by my Crossfit coach in Bali, on our recent travels. Located in busy Seminyak, firstly was a bit hesitant thinking how could one ‘switch off’ in the hustle and bustle that is central Bali.

But it happened. 60 minutes of silence, alone and relaxation.

A little about the tank we visited. 
Terapung Float Club was made with the intention as a sanctuary. Japanese – minimalistic influenced in décor. 

terapungUpon entry Terapung welcomes you into a clean, minimalist environment, helping you to relax, unwind and become one with the surrounds.  Within a four-storey building, is sleek, black volcanic stone bricks, wide glass panels and smooth metal surfaces, with each room and tank enclosed for your peace and quiet and pure enjoyment.

So what is floating you ask?

Taking the wellness world by storm, “floating” has become one of the most sought after relaxation practices in the last decade.
 Finally, this little island, now a hub for health and wellness, welcomes Terapung Float Club, the first premium flotation centre in Bali , found in the heart of Seminyak. 
 
Floating involves entering a large swimming pool, bath like floatation tank. (sometimes referred to as sensory deprivation tanks or just Float tanks), filled with warm water mixed with  a significant amount of Epsom Salts, creating a buoyant body of water on which your body will float, similar to the Dead Sea. 

Whilst in the tank… what happens?
 
Your time, which is 60 minutes, will enable a complete disconnect of the mind, the thoughts and ideas, from the physical frame,  basically a disconnect from the every day stresses of the body.
 
It’s no wonder why float tanks are hailed as the ultimate meditation tool .
This allows the mind to achieve a complete meditative state of pure relaxation and self-examination. Not only is floating therapeutic for our internal beings, our minds, but it decompresses the entire body, floating in the optimum environment in a beneficial solution the body can fully relax and rejuvenate.
 
So you ask what are the benefits of using a Flotation Tank?
 
Floating is a way for people to escape the pressures of everyday life and has been highly effective for people dealing with sleep disorders or those who encompass high stress work or home environments.
But there’s more added benefits.
 
The high concentration of Epsom Salts ( what is usually used to heal muscular pains) in the water also have profound health effects, from muscular recovery, improving skin and hair care, elevating mood through serotonin production and increasing energy. 
 
So walking in you’re greeted by kind, staff that explain everything putting you at ease.
Terapung focuses on a premium flotation experience; each float tank room comes with an en suite bathroom, to which you’re advised to shower prior.
 
The door closes, the music is set on a timer for 5 minutes. Allowing enough time to get yourself settled, into the bath ear plugs in and comfortable.
 
The floating sensation is unlike no other.
 
Your body drifts just as your mind. Each experience is different. It’s pitch black and silent. The temperature also rises to a point where you’re unable to differentiate between what body parts are inside in the float and outside the float. Completely naked you are, but completely comfortable.
 
Your time is your time.
 
Personally my muscles were in significant amounts of pain from training prior, to which it enabled a length of time to absorb the Epson salts into my skin.
 
I also fell asleep for at least 20 minutes, shutting off the outside world.
 
Post this, my mind went into a high creative state. I began to think of new ideas for the business, and other areas to grow. Now this may not sound like meditation to you, but this is to me. I for once, forgot about financial stresses, home life stresses, relationship issues or the amount of emails that were in my inbox. It was bliss.
 
After 60 minutes the music comes on softly to bring you out of the state whatever you may be in. Peacefully and slowly you come back to the real world. I wish my alarm every morning was this gentle and effective.
 
Then you shower, and afterwards you are welcome to enjoy their post-float lounge on the top floor. Here you find a peaceful sanctuary like space with a bonsai tree at its centre and open bay windows, complete with cinnamon tea soothing your soul as you prepare to go back into the real world.

That night welcomed the best sleep I had had in months.  I don’t even recall dreams. I slept a solid 10 hours. Straight.
The other favourable results was my muscular pain was completely gone. Days of CrossFit and heavy lifting, my body was reset.  Internally as well as externally.
 
Prior to this, I had heard of ‘floating’ but never experienced it. Now, highly recommend the experience. It is different for everyone, but as someone who stress impacts my daily life, I will continue to ‘float’ when and where I can..

‘’Invented in the mid 1950's by neuro-scientist Dr. John Lilly, floatation therapy tanks were originally named "sensory deprivation tanks," and sometimes "isolation tanks." Over the years the name was changed to float tanks or floatation therapy tanks. Although floating was invented in the United States, it has grown quickly over the past two decades in Europe. You can now  easily float around the world.
Floatation therapy is based on a scientific approach to deep relaxation called Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique or R.E.S.T. for short. The idea was developed in 1954 at NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) in Washington. Floating in a floatation tank triggers a deep relaxation response, much deeper than normal sleep. It enables us to drift into the elusive Theta state, which is hard to achieve.
Floatation REST has many physical and mental benefits because it provides an unparalleled level of relaxation. With the elimination of external stimuli, the central nervous system's workload is reduced by as much as 90%. This reduction draws a person's energy inward and promotes relaxation--also known as the parasympathetic response. The parasympathetic response is the mechanism by which the body naturally regenerates itself and maintains chemical and metabolic balance. Old wounds and injuries are allowed to heal faster. Increased T-cell production strengthens the immune system. This deep level of relaxation also benefits the cardiovascular system. Known as the vasodilatory effect, the body's circulation is increased while the blood pressure and heart rate are reduced. Furthermore, the elimination of gravity on the body allows muscles and joints to release tension and heal more rapidly. For this reason, people suffering from musculoskeletal and rheumatic conditions greatly benefit from Floatation REST.
Floating subtly changes our body chemistry, creating profound benefit for an individual's emotional balance. Negative emotions such as anxiety and fear are replaced by positive feelings of empowerment, confidence, and well-being.
 
As a person floats, the brain waves slow down into theta frequencies, a state of tranquility, creativity and very deep relaxation. Theta waves, measured at 4-7 Hz, represent the brain in a state of REM sleep (dreams), hypnosis, or lucid dreaming. Theta is the twilight state just before sleeping and just after waking, the border between the conscious and the subconscious world. By learning to consciously use a conscious, waking Theta brain wave we can access and influence the powerful subconscious part of ourselves that is normally inaccessible to our waking minds.
